Arthur Bastings, General Manager, Discovery Networks Europe
Arthur joined Discovery Networks in February 2004 as Senior Vice President and was promoted to Executive Vice President in early 2006. Discovery Networks is Europe's largest provider of factual entertainment programming, currently operating 25 channels under ten brand names across the EMEA region. The company is executing a growth strategy, which has resulted in double-digit revenue and profit increases as well as overseeing 13 channel launches and the opening of a further 10 offices since he joined. In his role, Bastings holds overall responsibility for all aspects of commercial, brand and content performance. Based in London, he oversees 7 geographical business units as well as ad sales to Europe-based global clients.
Prior to joining DNE, Bastings was with Turner Broadcasting Systems Europe, the TV arm of Time Warner. He held the post of Managing Director for Northern and Central Europe, responsible for the continued growth of CNN, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies as well as structuring Time Warner's holdings in German channels Viva and n-tv. Between 1994 and 2000, he held various posts at MTV Networks International, moving from Vice President of Strategic Planning in the corporate group to the post of Senior Vice President, Strategy and Business Operations at MTV Asia. Bastings helped MTV manage and execute its international growth strategy, focusing on brand localisation, new business models and organisation development.
Bastings, a Dutch National, holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Nijenrode University, the Netherlands and an M.A in International Economics and European studies from SAIS/John Hopkins University, U.S.A. He is a non-executive director of EM.TV AG, a listed German media group focused on sports broadcasting and kids entertainment.
